The Importance of a Balanced Diet
One of the most important things you can do for your child is to make sure they are eating a balanced diet. This means incorporating a variety of foods from all food groups into their meals, including fruits, vegetables, proteins, whole grains, and dairy or dairy alternatives. While not technically food groups, I like to include healthy fats and fun foods (sweets and treats) into food groups because we need to eat them, too! A well-balanced diet provides the nutrients your child needs to grow and thrive. It can also help grow well, stay energized, have a healthier immune system, and avoid diseases down the road.
This week’s Free Printable will introduce you and your child to the food groups just in time for back-to-school lunch packing! This fun activity sheet will help you and your child:
Name 5 different food groups
Identify which food group a specific food belongs to
Visualize that snacks are part of a healthy, balanced diet
What You Need:
Name the Food Group! activity sheet and notes sheet (for the answers)
Pencil, pen, crayon, or marker
What You Do:
On the activity sheet, look at the food items listed below from A to F.
Work individually or as a small group to determine: which food group does each of them belong?
Write the matching letter in the blank circle of its corresponding food group.
